Self-Regulated Learning

What is self-regulated learning?

Self-regulated learning (SRL) is an educational approach that fosters student success through personalized learning, individual goal setting, self-monitoring, and self-reflection. SRL increases students' autonomy in their educational journey to increase engagement and improve academic performance.

What are the key features of self-regulated learning?

There are several components to SRL, including:

  • Goal setting, or setting specific, measurable, and achievable (SMART) objectives for learning
  • Strategic planning, or selecting and organizing learning materials and strategies to personalize your academic experience
  • Self-monitoring, or tracking your performance to identify strengths and areas of improvement, adjusting your learning strategies accordingly
  • Self-reflection, or reviewing one’s learning process and outcomes to determine what strategies have been effective
  • Motivation, or the internal drive to engage and persist toward one’s goals with resilience
  • Self-efficacy, or the belief that you can achieve your goals through dedication and persistence

What are the benefits of self-regulated learning?

SRL nurtures students’ motivation while improving engagement and academic performance. By taking a personalized and autonomous approach to their learning experiences, students also hone career-ready soft skills such as problem solving, time management, and organization. Moreover, SRL fosters a growth mindset — increasing confidence, adaptability, and resilience.

How can educators support self-regulated learning?

Instructors can facilitate SRL by incorporating strategies such as:

  • Beginning a course with a survey to help students identify their goals and learning preferences
  • Encouraging self-reflection before, during, and after learning activities
  • Scaffolding assignments by breaking them into smaller short-term goals
  • Engaging in discussions about assignments to identify potential challenges and helpful resources
  • Modeling self-regulation by demonstrating strategies to set goals, monitor ones’ own progress, and reflect on learning outcomes
