An Institutional Student Information Record (ISIR) is a personalized document created by the United States Department of Education. Your ISIR helps determine your eligibility for various federal student aid programs.
Is my ISIR different from the FAFSA?
While an ISIR is not the same as a Federal Application for Student Aid (FAFSA), the two are closely related. Whereas the FAFSA is used to apply for aid, your ISIR summarizes and assesses the information provided on your application. The government then sends your ISIR to the colleges and universities listed on your FAFSA, helping determine the aid you can receive.
How do colleges use the ISIR to determine my aid eligibility?
Schools use your ISIR to calculate the specific amount of aid you qualify for, then tailor your financial aid package accordingly. Although it is a significant determinant for need-based aid, your ISIR may also help decide if you are eligible for merit aid.
What information is included in my ISIR?
Your ISIR includes critical financial and personal details, such as your Expected Family Contribution (EFC) and Adjusted Gross Income (AGI). To learn more about the specific information included in your ISIR, consult the Office of Federal Student Aid (FSA).
Who can access my ISIR?
Your ISIR is a private, confidential document only accessible to you and your school. Once your FAFSA is processed, you can view your ISIR by logging in to your FSA account. By accessing your ISIR online, you can review its accuracy and adjust any incorrect information. You do not need to send your ISIR to your school. The US Department of Education will securely transmit the document to any colleges or universities listed on your FAFSA application.
Do I receive a new ISIR every year?
Yes. Because you must submit a new FAFSA every school year, your ISIR will be updated to reflect your most recent federal aid application.
