how to find a meaningful career

How to Find a Fulfilling Career You Love

Finding a meaningful career—a career that you truly love—can feel like a pipe dream for many. At the end of the day, too many people stay in their jobs to make ends meet or to maintain stability, simply because they are comfortable. Those who change careers often do so in search of more fulfillment, either personally or professionally.

But what exactly does fulfillment mean, when you’re considering a career? While the term “fulfilling” is somewhat subjective, a fulfilling career is typically one that provides you with a great sense of satisfaction, contentment, and purpose. It means that the job is positively influencing your overall well-being. It might align with your values or interests, and support your current needs.

What is a Fulfilling Career?

Job fulfillment is a multifaceted concept that goes beyond just salary and job security. A fulfilling career involves a blend of personal satisfaction, meaningful and valued work, and a supportive workplace environment. Of course, the definition of “fulfilling” might look a bit different for everyone. Here are some of the many factors that can contribute to job fulfillment:

The Ability to Make an Impact

Feeling that one’s work makes a difference and contributes to a larger goal or mission can enhance job fulfillment. As such, some of the most fulfilling careers are those that help people in need—in areas like healthcare, education, human services, and social work.

A Healthy Work-Life Balance

A healthy balance between work responsibilities and personal life can help reduce stress and maintain your overall well-being. This means that the job offers you the flexibility you need to spend time with friends and family, pursue personal passions, and balance that with your work schedule or workload.

Alignment with Personal Values, Passions, and Talents

When a job aligns with your core values, strengths, and/or interests, it can provide a deeper sense of purpose and meaning. Being able to take your skills and passions, and apply them to your every day job, can lead to feelings of success, pride, and motivation in your role.

Autonomy and Trust

Having a degree of control and independence in your work—whether that’s the ability to be creative, make decisions, or simply own certain tasks—can make all the difference for some people in their careers. Autonomy in a job means that others trust you to do your work; and that can bring great fulfillment personally and professionally.

Good Salary and Great Benefits

High salary potential is not just an attractive characteristic—it is a definitive factor of job fulfillment for many people. Careers that offer fair compensation and benefits, that meet employees’ expectations and needs, and that offer promotions and salary growth, are some of the most fulfilling.

Opportunities for Upward Mobility

Jobs that offer opportunities for learning, professional development, and career advancement contribute significantly to job fulfillment. If you are able to grow, to challenge yourself, and to continue to improve, you are more likely to find meaning and purpose in your work.

Positive Company Culture and Work Environment

A supportive and positive work environment, including good relationships with colleagues and supervisors, is a significant contributor to job satisfaction. Moreover, when companies appreciate and recognize their employees, it can foster more fulfillment and motivation in the workplace.

How to Find a Fulfilling Career in 5 Steps

Now that we’ve explored some of the common characteristics of job fulfillment, the question becomes: How can you find a fulfilling career? It’s easy to dream-up an incredible career, but how can you secure one that meets all your wants and needs?

Take these steps to find a career that brings you fulfillment, both personally and professionally:

1. Think about what’s most important to you.

What are you looking for in a career, exactly? After reviewing the list above, which factors will bring you the most fulfillment from your job? Take stock of your interests, passions, talents, values, and beliefs, and use those to formulate a wish list for your next career move. For example, do you need a career that offers financial stability? A job that allows you to be creative and hands-on? A role where you can make a difference in others’ lives? Reflect on what matters most to you in a job, and use those answers to help inform your career choice.

2. Research potential career options.

Once you have a grasp on what you’re looking for, you can begin to research possible career pathways. Knowing your interests, strengths, and goals alone can help narrow down your search. You can explore lists of the most rewarding careers, or you can do some in-field research of your own. Job shadowing, internships, apprenticeships, and even informational interviews are all great ways to get familiar with different career fields.

3. Pursue the necessary education and training.

Once you know the field you’d like to work in, you can start to fulfill the requirements. Some industries, such as those in healthcare, will require formal education and training. Some will require professional certification and/or licensure. Be sure to research what’s needed for your role, then find a program that can help you meet those prerequisites. At Goodwin University, all of our programs are designed with specific careers in mind. Classes are led by industry professionals and hone in on the skills needed to succeed in a variety of hands-on or technical roles.

4. Make connections.

We’ve all heard the phrase, “It’s all about who you know.” And in many ways, this is true. While education and skills are incredibly important in landing a job, having connections can help you stand out. As you seek a truly fulfilling career, be sure to make connections along the way. Network with other professionals, professors, and classmates. Join professional associations, attend networking events, and connect with other like-minded individuals on social media. Find a mentor who can advise you during times of need. Doing all this can help you build relationships with others in your field, gain invaluable advice from seasoned professionals, and keep you up-to-date on industry news.

5. Build your experience.

College coursework is important (and required) for many fields, but hands-on experience can help you stand out from other job candidates. During your time in school, be sure to take advantage of internships and apprenticeships, clinical on-sites, and work-study programs as they relate to your field. Outside of your coursework, you can also gain valuable job experience through volunteer work, freelance projects, and even entry-level jobs in your area of study. Interested in becoming a nurse, for example? Consider a part-time position as a medical office administrator! These experiences can get you familiar with the everyday bustle, as well as build up your resume.

On the note of experience, try to be open-minded about the opportunities that come your way. As much as you want to hold out for the job of your dreams, doing so can take time and patience. So, be flexible and be open to adjusting your path. Sometimes a fulfilling career emerges from unexpected opportunities. Additionally, new experiences can teach you more about your interests and needs. With that in mind, try it all, gain exposure, but be persistent – keep climbing that career ladder until you reach your goals.

6. Stay true to your wants and needs.

As important as it is to expose yourself to different experiences and careers, it’s also important to keep your best interests in mind. Whether job fulfillment means a healthy work-life balance, a hefty salary, or a helpful and impactful role, don’t ever feel like you need to settle for anything less.

So, as you work towards a fulfilling career, make sure to consistently reflect on your progress and check-in with yourself. Ask yourself, Am I happy in my current position? What do I need to change to find happiness and fulfillment? What would I like to stay the same?

Additionally, check-in with your colleagues and managers. Gather feedback on your work, and ask them what you can do better. Doing so can help you build and develop your career, and continue to push the limits until you’re in a career you love.
